Wärtsilä Vessel Battery Charging Systems

Wrtsil

Shore-to-ship battery charging for electric and hybrid vessels: AC chargers (up to 15 MW+ at medium voltage), DC chargers (7 MW+), manual CCS 2/MCS and automated cable handling, plus wireless charging.

Description

Wärtsilä vessel battery charging solutions supply power from shore infrastructure to ships with energy storage systems, enabling emission-free operation when charged with renewable energy. Tailored systems offer connection times typically below 1 minute, allowing ferries to charge during short turnarounds. The IEC 80005 AMP shore power system can also be used where port stays are long enough, such as for RoPax or RoRo vessels.

Charger types

  • AC charger: AC supply converted to DC on board, often using the ship's existing converter; above 5 MW a switch from 690 V to 6,600 V is required; the largest medium-voltage chargers exceed 15 MW
  • DC charger: no onboard converter needed, saving space and weight; the largest DC chargers deliver more than 7 MW, with parallel systems for more
  • Manual chargers: lower cost, using standard plugs such as CCS 2 (up to 350 kW) or MCS (up to 3 MW); Wärtsilä delivered the first manual CCS 2 charger for a ship, on the zero-emission fast ferry MS Medstraum
  • Automated chargers: automated cable handling systems (e.g. Zinus, Stemmann) that locate and connect to the ship without an operator
  • Wireless charging: replaces the cable connection so charging starts as soon as the ship docks, reducing the required shore power rating; can be combined with auto docking and vacuum mooring

Applications

Fully electric and plug-in hybrid ferries, RoPax and other battery-equipped vessels.
