Wireless Propulsion Remote Control Systems

Thrustmaster wireless remote control for azimuth thrusters, e.g. bow boats and barges controlled from the tug or towboat. 2.4 GHz FHSS CAN-bus link, under 20 ms latency, 460–762 m range, 12–48 VDC, IP67. Automatic backup switching.

Description

Thrustmaster wireless propulsion remote control systems let a crew control azimuth thrusters on an unmanned bow boat or barge from the towing or pushing vessel. Thrustmaster has supplied them since the 1980s.

Key features

  • Simple controls with ergonomic levers and touch screens that need little space
  • Switches automatically between normal and backup control, giving redundant azimuth control that meets FMEA requirements for DP operations
  • Electric-over-hydraulic control on a 24 VDC supply
  • Drop-in bridge control panel, plus a local control panel inside each thruster's hydraulic power unit for steering, raising and lowering, alarms and display of operating parameters

Wireless module

  • 2.4 GHz wireless data link carrying all CAN-bus messages between local and remote panels
  • Response time under 20 ms
  • Operating voltage 12–48 VDC
  • Range 1,500 ft to 2,500 ft (460 m to 762 m)
  • NEMA 4 (IP67) sealed housing
  • Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) for reliability in crowded RF bands
  • LED diagnostic and status lights

Applications

  • Towboats controlling an azimuth thruster on the bow boat of a river barge train
  • Tugs controlling a stern thruster on an ocean-going ro-ro barge
