Shift Clean Energy System / Package

Fixed Battery Systems

Fixed marine battery energy storage systems from Shift Clean Energy for ferries, workboats and yachts, used for full-electric operation, hybrid harbour operation and peak shaving during dynamic positioning.

Description

Shift Fixed Battery Systems are marine energy storage systems that power ferries, workboats and yachts, reducing or eliminating diesel fuel use, emissions, engine run time and noise.

Operating modes

  • Full electric: batteries are the ship's primary power, replacing diesel fuel and emissions; they are charged at each end of the trip.
  • Hybrid: batteries power the vessel entirely electrically for specific operations such as in-harbour cruising, reducing emissions, fuel use and engine run time.
  • Peak shaving: during dynamic positioning, the batteries absorb load variations so the engines see only the average system load, improving fuel efficiency and reducing engine hours and low-load operation.

Applications

  • Aurora hybrid electric ferry – 46 departures per day
  • Elektra hybrid electric ferry – €5 of electricity per crossing
  • A ferry originally designed with a 2 MW battery system and 30 tons of weight allocated to ESS was instead fitted with a 5-year system of 605 kWh using Shift's Cellswäp battery re-coring approach, reducing weight by 70%.

Benefits

  • Lower or zero fuel consumption
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Increased safety and quiet operation
  • Cleaner harbour air and less underwater noise for marine life
