Open-Loop Scrubber Conversion

Conversion of open-loop scrubbers to closed-loop or hybrid operation using LiqTech SiC-membrane wash water treatment, from vessel survey and design through installation, commissioning and crew training.

Description

LiqTech's Open-Loop Scrubber Conversion turns an existing open-loop exhaust gas cleaning system into a closed-loop or hybrid scrubber. Vessels can keep operating on HFO while running in zero-discharge mode or discharging clean, treated water in areas where open-loop discharge is banned.

How it works

The water treatment system cleans wash water from the scrubber tower, removing heavy metals, PAHs and particulate matter, and returns it to the tower for reuse. A water monitoring unit continuously controls pH, temperature, turbidity and PAH against IMO discharge limits. Solids are concentrated in silicon carbide membranes and dewatered either as liquid sludge or, with an optional filter press, as a filter cake of up to 80% dry matter for disposal in port. Sulphur removal from the exhaust is 98%.

System scope

  • Coarse pre-filtration
  • Fully automated SiC membrane system
  • Module for dewatering membrane reject
  • Separate filter skid for easier installation
  • Modular design: capacity can be increased later; suited to retrofits and newbuilds
  • Low maintenance

Project services

  • Basic design: vessel inspection, 3D scanning, review of existing scrubber, BOM, P&ID, alkali supply chain plan (NaOH, MgO or others), class approval plan
  • Detailed design: heat exchanger, pH control, water treatment unit, process tank and control valve specifications, 2D/3D design, CFD simulations
  • Installation supervision, onboard commissioning, class approval and documentation
  • Crew training

Experience

More than 250 marine scrubber water treatment systems installed.
