About

Tohatsu traces its origins to the Takata Motor Research Institute, founded in Tokyo in April 1922 by Masuzo Takata. The business became a joint stock company in October 1932, was renamed Tokyo Hatsudoki Corporation in 1939 and has carried the name Tohatsu Corporation since 1972. Outboard motor production began in 1956 with the 1.5 hp OB model.

The head office is in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo, with the manufacturing plant and parts centre in Komagane, Nagano prefecture, an R&D centre in Kawaguchi, Saitama, and a sales office in Osaka. The company reports 500 employees and is led by President Isami Hyuga.

Subsidiaries include Tohatsu Marine Corporation, established in 1988 as a joint venture with Brunswick, and Tohatsu America Corporation in Texas. Besides the marine business, Tohatsu runs a fire protection business built on portable fire pumps.
