Steyr Motors is headquartered in Steyr, Austria, where its manufacturing facility is located. The company traces its engineering heritage to Josef und Franz Werndl & Company, founded in 1864, and later Steyr Werke AG and Steyr Daimler Puch AG. Steyr Motors GmbH was founded in 2001.
The company was acquired by Thales in 2019 and by Mutares SE & Co. KGaA in 2022. In 2024 it changed its name to Steyr Motors AG and listed in the Scale segment of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, followed in 2025 by a listing in the direct market plus segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange. The history timeline also records the acquisition of BUKH A/S in 2026.
Julian Cassutti has been Chief Executive Officer since 2022. Marine engines are sold and serviced through a network of distributors and dealers.
