About

Bergen Engines traces its roots to the shipyard Bergen Mekaniske Verksted (BMV), founded in 1855. BMV began developing its own combustion engines in 1942 and delivered its first propulsion engine in 1946, for a fishing vessel. More than 7,700 engines have been built since, and about half are still in service.

The company moved to a new factory at Hordvikneset, north of Bergen, Norway, in 1971, where its engines are still designed and built. It became a Rolls-Royce company in 1999 and was acquired by the British engineering group Langley Holdings plc on 31 December 2021.

Bergen Engines says it delivers reliable and efficient power solutions that enable and sustain the energy transition.
