Yanmar Marine Engine Repower

Yanmar repower service for recreational and light commercial boats: replacing old inboard engines with new Yanmar diesels, with guidance on engine selection, installation planning, rebuild vs. repower and emissions compliance.

Description

Yanmar's repower programme replaces ageing or failed inboard engines with new Yanmar marine diesels, installed through certified Yanmar dealers and installers, for recreational and light-duty commercial boats.

Benefits

  • Improved acceleration, power and responsiveness
  • Lower running costs, higher uptime and better fuel efficiency
  • Latest electronics, controls and diagnostics with connectivity to multi-function displays
  • Smoother, quieter operation; new engine covered by manufacturer's warranty

When to repower

  • Engine becoming unreliable or losing horsepower
  • High fuel consumption
  • Rising maintenance costs and downtime
  • Engine failure; with twin engines, replacing both is advised if the remaining engine is near end of life

Planning considerations

  • Inboard replacement typically takes one to four weeks at the yard
  • Displacement hulls usually need like-for-like power; planing hulls may gain from the better power-to-weight of modern diesels
  • More power may require a different marine gear, stronger engine beds, larger shafts and propellers, more fuel capacity and reworked intake and exhaust
  • Yanmar suggests repowering may be the better investment when a rebuild would cost about 40% or more of a new installation

Emissions compliance

Repowering with a current emissions-compliant common-rail engine is recommended by emissions authorities; where no compliant model fits without major modification, a non-compliant replacement engine may be permitted.
