SMM’s Huge Ship Propeller
The massive ship propeller on display at SMM 2016 is the official symbol of the world's largest international maritime trade fair.
Visitors to SMM 2016 can’t miss the huge ship propeller on the plaza of Hamburg's fair complex.
At 48.7 metric tons, and measuring more than 8 meters in diameter, the massive propeller is a true spectacle and serves as the official symbol of SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair which opened in Hamburg on Tuesday, September 6 and is expected to draw more than 2,200 exhibitors from roughly 70 countries, and up to 50,000 industry visitors.
The high-efficiency propeller on display at this year’s SMM is made by Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG) and represents a significant step toward “green propulsion”, one of the major topics on the SMM 2016 agenda.
When the fair is over, the propeller will be installed on the 275-meter containership MSC Lorena, replacing the vessel's original propeller.
“The new propeller will be delivered with a finned boss cap which enables further energy savings and helps reduce the ship’s CO2 emissions,” said Manfred Urban, CEO of Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH. “Assuming a consumption of 100 [metric tons] of heavy fuel oil per day, the new propeller will cut the CO2 emissions by one [metric ton] per hour traveled. This is equivalent to the amount emitted by a passenger car traveling 6,500 km.”
